Moldovan wines in Germany at the largest world wine exhibition

Days of great importance for Moldovan wine! In Germany, there is the largest wine exhibition in the world, where Moldova is represented by a whole wineries suite. Forgetting the competition, they made a common front to promote the image of the Republic of Moldova and, of course, our wines. And it seems to be a great success, because at the Berliner Wine Trophy the Moldovan wines took 31 gold and silver medals, including the Golden Grand Medal, Moldova 1 reports.

Last year, Moldova had one of the richest grape harvests in the past 10 years. Thus, our country has ranked 19th among wine producers around the world.

From a total area of 128,000 hectares of vineyards 680,000 tons of grapes were harvested, which represents a yield of 5.3 tons per hectare. 356,000 tons of grapes were processed, of which 165 million liters of wine, 25 million sparkling wine and 48 million distilled were obtained.

The value of Moldovan wine exports reached 2.8 billion lei, up 11% from the average of 2015-2017. Wine exports account for 14% of the value generated by the agro-food industry, 6% of the total exports of the Republic of Moldova and 2 percent of the Gross Domestic Product. Romania, China, Poland, the Czech Republic and the United States of America are among the most relevant importers of Moldovan wines.

The wine sector in the Republic of Moldova is the largest generator of jobs in rural areas. More than 29,000 entrepreneurs work in this sector of the economy. In 2018, the investments made in the field amounted to 350 million lei, of which 184 million were allocated for vineyards, 82 million - for the modernization of the wineries, 30 million - for the development of the markets, and another 4 million lei were invested in various viticulture development programs.
