Farmers are experiencing losses due to the drought

The drought has affected crops and farmers are suffering significant losses. Farmers in Gagauzia harvest grain on the last hundred meters and say that the results will be only at the level of 40 thousand tons, which represents only 35 percent of the planned harvest. Maize and sunflower have also been affected, and some households are forced to clear their seedlings. Farmers are desperate and fear that they will not be able to recover what they have invested, Moldova 1 reports.

Denis Berezian, a farmer from Comrat, has been predicting grain problems since March. The most pessimistic forecasts came true. The household was left without the first category of cereals. The harvest will be significantly lower than last year and not all farmers will be able to meet their contractual quota obligations.

"We forecast this year to have a harvest of 36-40 thousand tons in Gagauzia. Some farms cannot fulfill all their contractual obligations, they have completely lost their harvest," said Andrei Dimitroglo, the head of the Agriculture Department from Gagauzia.

For the second group of cereals, such as maize and sunflower, the situation in the region is just as difficult. There are fields that farmers will not be able to harvest even to feed the animals.

"The drought has affected the harvest. During this period, the corn must be at least shoulder length or even longer. In order to process this land, we spent over eight million lei and we have losses, respectively. The lack of humidity has led to the fact that we have a 50 cm high sunflower, there is no harvest, it is clear that the results will be disastrous," says Denis Berezian, farmer.

According to experts, such droughts have not existed for a long time. The current drought is considered the fourth strongest in 20 years.
