Number of the unemployed in Moldova increases amid pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic has hit the job market considerably. In April this year, the number of registered unemployed increased by 48% compared to March. At least that is what a study by the Ministry of Economy shows, which estimates that this crisis will increase the number of the unemployed, Mesager reports.

According to the National Bureau of Statistics, the pandemic affected more than 33,000 Moldovans, or about 4% of the employed population. Of these, almost 61%  are people who have not worked at all.

Moreover, over 28% of employees worked from home during this period, and over 33% had a reduced work schedule.

The most affected were the activities of trade, industry and education.

The crisis generated by the pandemic will continue to affect the labor market, according to a study conducted by the Ministry of Economy. Experts predict that there will be jobs, but there will be no one to work, as the number of employees could be reduced by almost 13%. Thus, during this year, we could have almost 100 thousand unemployed. Declining demand for labor and declining remittances and returning emigrants are among the main factors that will affect the labor market.

The increase in the number of those who did not work is caused by the restrictive measures imposed with the state of emergency. 34% did not work after their company stopped working, 29% were forced to take annual leave, 28% were sent on unpaid forced leave, and 6% were technically unemployed.

In order to combat the crisis in the labor market, the authorities intend to implement several measures. Thus, companies would receive more support from the state to maintain jobs, and employees would be motivated by more social support. At the same time, officials aim to make more use of the economic potential of migrants.
