Food prices, under the authorities' control

Prices for several vegetables and fruits increased last year by over 50 percent. The data were released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), which states that food prices have increased, on average, by more than 12 percent. To prevent increases, President Igor Dodon proposed that the tariffs of social products be monitored weekly by the Executive, reports Moldova 1.

According to the data provided by the NBS, last year, among the fruits, the highest price increase was recorded in apples, plums, apricots and peaches, with almost 60%. And among the vegetables, a major leap was the price of garlic - over 40%, for cucumbers by almost 20%. And the price of chicken eggs increased by more than 37%, and in cereals - by more than 17%.

The sellers say the prices were dictated by the climatic conditions that affected the agricultural crops.

The increases have affected the most the buyers whom it was difficult to cope with.

Experts argue that inflation was driven by the lack of effective state-level economic policies and a cost-effective subsidy system in agriculture.

“The agricultural sector is underdeveloped for a long time and ignored by the authorities, for a long time and this is seen in our daily life. A critical aspect we attested to last year, the real inflation rate was 9,0%, not 7,5%, but inflation was reduced by the way the prices for products and services that are limited by the state evolved," said Viorel Gîrbu, economist.

To redress the situation, the head of state, Igor Dodon, proposed that prices, especially for social products, be monitored weekly by the Government.

"We are in a market economy, the rules say that the market dictates prices, but that does not mean that, the Government, the state should not get involved in everything regarding price monitoring. I ask the Prime Minister to return to that mechanism when weekly at the level of the First Deputy Prime Minister or at the Prime Minister’s level, a detailed analysis of the weekly dynamics of prices for all types of products in Moldova, but with an emphasis on social products was made,” said the president.

Prime Minister Ion Chicu claims that the Government could intervene when cartel agreements are established.

"We are in a market economy, prices are free, but we can intervene when cartel agreements are made and artificially prices raise on some services or products," said the prime minister.

However, last year prices fell for some vegetables, such as dried onions, carrots, cabbage. Tariffs for air passenger services, liquefied gas and fuels also decreased.
