PAS asks the CEC to cancel its circular on the financing of the presidential election

The Central Electoral Commission (CEC) allegedly sent a circular yesterday, informing the candidates in the presidential elections that they will not be able to benefit from the financial resources accumulated so far on the parties' accounts. The money for the presidential campaign would be collected starting with October 1, when the election campaign starts. Statements to this effect were made by the leader of the Action and Solidarity Party (PAS), Maia Sandu, who in a briefing asked the CEC to urgently cancel this circular and replace it with a correct decision, allowing the elections to take place correctly and transparently.

"Yesterday came a letter from the CEC with the already approved proposal of the socialist and former adviser of Igor Dodon, Maxim Lebedinschi, in which it is said that political parties have nothing to do with presidential candidates and that money cannot be used in this campaign. What the CEC says is that we have to stay calm until October 1st and only when the account for the election campaign opens should we start raising money. I mean, we have to start the campaign with zero lei in the account. That is the logic of the CEC majority. We believe that it is an abusive decision of the new socialist majority from the CEC,” declared the PAS leader, Maia Sandu.

"In this circular of the CEC, issued yesterday, reference is made to an article in the Electoral Code, according to which the parties do not appear in the definition of the electoral competitor for the presidential elections. Meanwhile, in this 2016 definition, changes have been made in legislation to the contrary. I am referring to the 2019 amendment which provided that parties receive money for their performance in the presidential election. This was not only written in the law, but the CEC also executed this provision," says PAS deputy Sergiu Litvinenco.

In this context, the leader of PAS, Maia Sandu, appealed to the political parties for solidarity. "We urge the CEC to urgently cancel this circular and replace it with a correct decision. We will signal this abuse of the CEC to all development partners. We urge all political parties to show solidarity, not to allow this abuse to pass as Dodon wants," Maia Sandu also declared.

Contacted for a reaction, CEC Secretary Maxim Lebedinschi did not answer our calls.

TRM.MD recalls that, according to the CEC, 13 candidates could run in the November 1 presidential election. For the time being, the Central Electoral Commission has registered two electoral contestants for the position of President of the Republic of Moldova. These are Andrei Năstase, forwarded by the Political Party "Dignity and Truth Platform" and Renato Usatii - by the Political Party "Our Party".
