Presidential candidate Svetlana Tikhanovskaya called on supporters and law enforcement to avoid violence and accused authorities of injuring people in clashes. In turn, President Alexander Lukashenko said that the law will always be at the head of the table.

"No one has demanded any repression in violation of the law. And he won't do that. Obey the law and all talk of repression will go away. If you violate, you will answer," said Alexander Lukashenko.

Lukashenko, 65, has been in charge of Belarus since 1994 and is accused by some of his citizens of handling the crisis, but also of violating human rights. Hundreds of people were arrested in anti-presidential demonstrations during the campaign. In the previous elections in 2015, Lukashenko was declared the winner with 83.5% of the vote.
