Parliamentary elections in North Korea

The North Koreans elect a new Parliament on Sunday for the second time under the leadership of the supreme leader Kim Jong-un, but the procedure is a formality and the competition is not a real one, according to Dpa, quoted by mediafax.ro.

Voters must tick "yes" or "no" on the ballot, after a single candidate from the Korean Workers' Party is designated for each constituency.

The 687 are elected for a five-year term and the results are announced in two days.

According to the North Korean KCNA agency, about 57% of voters voted by noon.

"All voters participate in the prosperity of the socialist country and in the development of the people's power together with their pride and honor," KCNA writes.

Observers say the elections are aimed at strengthening unity in the country, which is internationally isolated because of its nuclear program.

A second Summit between Kim Jong-un and US President Donald Trump ended in February in Hanoi without signing a treaty.
