Terrorist attack in Afghanistan: At least 24 people killed

At least 24 people, including teenagers, were killed in a suicide bombing on Saturday at an educational center in the Afghan capital, Kabul, Afghan officials were quoted as saying by Reuters and Agerpres.

The attacker detonated his explosive charges on the street, in front of the Kawsar-e Danish center in the west of the Afghan capital. Most of the victims are young people between the ages of 15 and 26. Another 57 people were injured in the attack, according to a spokesman for the Afghan Interior Ministry.

The attack was claimed by the Islamic State in a statement posted on Instagram, but without providing evidence in this regard.

A Taliban spokesman denied their involvement in the attack, in a message posted on Twitter.

The attack, condemned by NATO and the Afghan government, took place in an area largely inhabited by the Shiite community in Afghanistan, a minority that has in the past been the target of several attacks by groups such as the Islamic State.

Dozens of young people were killed in the same area of Kabul in 2018, in another attack on an educational center, and in May, 24 people, including mothers and babies, died in an attack on a maternity hospital.

US Special Envoy for Afghanistan Zalmay Khalilzad on Sunday called on Twitter to curb violence and speed up the peace process, citing escalating violence in recent weeks, including the conclusion of the Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission that an Afghan government air raid resulted in the deaths of 12 children.
