Red travel alert warning for Spain

Spain has been hit by a freak snow blizzard that will last up to five days, according to the latest BBC weather forecast, in what could be the "most intense" snowfall to strike the country on record.

Extreme weather has struck Europe, sparking a bizarre blizzard storm across Spain this weekend. The unusual weather has triggered a terrfying and rare red weather alert in Spain, amid warnings for snow, freezing temperatures, rain and high winds. BBC meteorologist Susan Powell said that two meters of snow could be dumped across the Iberian peninsula within just 24 hours.

The worst affected region is likely to be the Balearic Islands, where Mallorca will be hit by 120 litres of rainfall in just 12 hours.

This has prompted Mallorca to make emergency plans for severe floods.

Popular tourist destinations like Ibiza and Formentera will also see extremely heavy rain.
