California: Hundreds of homes evacuated following heavy vegetation fire

California authorities on Wednesday ordered the evacuation of about 500 homes following a rapidly spreading vegetation fire in northern Los Angeles after burning 4,000 acres early in the evening, informs AFP.

The fire broke out in the afternoon near Lake Hughes, first scorching 20 acres, then covering another 4,000 acres in less than three hours, according to Los Angeles County firefighters.

More than 300 firefighters were mobilized. They were backed by helicopters and aircraft to fight the blaze.

"Residents in the area are being evacuated" by local police, the fire department said on Twitter.

Fires are widespread in California in recent years, in part due to climate change.

The most devastating fire in California history, Camp Fire happened in November 2018 in the north of the state and killed 86 people.
