Warning of bad weather in Spain

Two people died Thursday after the car they were driving was flooded by heavy rains that have fallen in the last 24 hours in eastern Spain, local intervention services said, according to Reuters and Mediafax.

The victims, aged 70, have died in the Castilla-La Mancha region, said on Twitter Spain's emergency service.

In the Valencia region, at least two rivers came out of the compound, leading to the evacuation of dozens of people.

Courses were suspended in the Valencia and Murcia regions. Local authorities have recommended to the population of the worst affected areas to stay in homes. Bad weather interrupted road and port traffic.

The Spanish Meteorological Service has issued a Red Code warning of rainfall in several regions of the south-east of the country, these being the most abundant rainfall in more than a century.

The amount of precipitation could exceed 200 liters per square meter on Thursday and Friday, on the coast of the Mediterranean, in the regions Valencia, Murcia and Alicante, warned meteorologists.

The Clariano River flooded at night the streets of Ontinyent, located south of Valencia.

Over the last 24 hours, the showers have reached 300 liters per square meter. The Meteorological Service announced that this was the largest amount of rainfall since 1917.
