Coronavirus: India has reached 5.9 million cases and nearly 100,000 deaths

India registered 88,600 new infections on Sunday and reached a total of 5.9 million cases of coronavirus, becoming the second most affected country in the world after the United States, reports EFE, quoted by Agerpres.

The number of COVID-19 deaths in this country of 1.35 billion people has reached 94,503, of which 1,124 deaths have been recorded in recent hours, according to the Indian Ministry of Health.

The number of new infections has risen again in India after a declining trend in recent days.

Earlier this week, 75,083 cases were reported in India, compared to the world record of 97,570 reported infections in a single day in the country two weeks ago.

According to official data, three quarters of daily contagions are concentrated in ten states, led by the western state of Maharashtra.

The state, with Mumbai as its capital, has 1.3 million new coronavirus infections.

If at the beginning of June more than half of the new cases in this state were concentrated in Mumbai, but last Wednesday the rural areas of Maharashtra concentrated more than 80% of the new contagions.

COVID-19 infection has spread rapidly since early June, after the government began to relax the containment measures it had imposed to restart economic activity.

India, a country with a population of 1.35 billion, also reported the highest number of people cured, which is currently around 80%.
