Coronavirus: Russia has registered 23,586 new cases and 481 deaths

Russia reported 23,586 new cases of coronavirus on Sunday, including 4,012 in Moscow, which plans to reopen public schools on Monday after the extended New Year's holiday, Reuters was quoted as saying by Agerpres.

Russia's anti-coronavirus crisis center has confirmed the deaths of 481 people in the past 24 hours, bringing the total death toll from COVID-19 to 65,566.

Moscow has extended until January 21 all restrictions adopted to limit the spread of COVID-19 disease, except for a provision that provides for the return of students to schools starting Monday, Mayor Sergei Sobianin announced on Thursday.

Russia, which launched a voluntary vaccination campaign last month with its own Sputnik V vaccine, has managed to avoid imposing a new strict lockdown at the national level, as it did last spring during the first wave of the coronavirus pandemic, opting, instead, for measures based on local restrictions.
