Coronavirus: Slovakia intends to mass test the population to reduce contamination

Slovakia is planning a mass population testing campaign and isolation measures to combat a serious increase in new coronavirus infections, Health Minister Marek Krajci said on Saturday, Reuters was quoted by Agerpres as saying.

Slovakia, a country with a population of 5.5 million, has seen a record number of new cases and hospitalizations since the beginning of the year.

A total of 3,055 people with COVID-19 were hospitalized on Saturday, despite some slowdown in hospitalizations, amid partial isolation measures at the national level.

"We want to test people, isolate those who spread the virus, the people they come in contact with and thus reduce the number of infections by up to 50%," Krajci said during a televised press briefing. He added that the government would finalize details of the plan on Sunday.

If the test is successful, Slovakia could relax some of the measures required to fight the epidemic in early February, Krajci said.

Its six-level, color-coded state of emergency is currently black, the color that indicates the worst situation.
