Virus: Venezuela exceeds 1,000 cases per day for the first time

Venezuela has for the first time exceeded the threshold of 1,000 cases of coronavirus contamination in 24 hours, the government announced on Tuesday.

Some 1,138 new cases of contamination were listed between Monday and Tuesday, for a total of 27,938 cases, said Minister of Communication and Information, Jorge Rodríguez, The Canadian reports.

The coronavirus epidemic has officially killed 238 people since the start of the pandemic.

The country, which is facing an acceleration in contamination, only had fewer than 20,000 cases nine days ago.

This official record, however, is questioned by the opposition or non-governmental organizations such as Human Rights Watch, who consider that it is far below the reality in this country in crisis of 30 million inhabitants.

Venezuela’s President Nicolas Maduro on Sunday extended the “state of alert” for 30 days due to the coronavirus pandemic, which allows him to extend the quarantine which has been in effect since March.
