Europol: The number of crimes increased rapidly during the COVID-19 pandemic

The number of crimes increased rapidly during the COVID-19 pandemic, warns Europol. Investigators have identified a proliferation of cybercrime, fraud, theft and forgery cases. In Italy, for example, crime has decreased by over 60%, while attempts to entice minors online are increasing, reports Moldova 1.

Europol warns that during the pandemic, criminals take advantage of unprecedented demand for sanitary products and sell counterfeit items, including protective masks, disinfectant gels and medicines. It has increased cybercrime and crime, especially as many people now work from home, where data connections and networks may be less secure. At the same time, Europol anticipates a rapid increase in fraud cases.

In Italy, however, the crimes decreased by 64% in the first 22 days of March 2020 compared to the same period last year. All types of offenses have decreased, starting with street crime, but not computer crimes and, in particular, online enticement of minors.

Pedophiles take advantage of the fact that most of the children isolated in the house are in front of the computer and use social networks to identify the victims. Attempts are also being made to scam electronically, namely false fundraising. In contrast, domestic violence decreased by 43.6 percent.
