Iraq: Clashes between security forces and anti-government demonstrators

Iraqi security forces clashed with anti-government protesters in Baghdad on Sunday, injuring at least 39 people, most of them police, by projectiles fired by both sides, according to security officials, writes news.ro, quoting Reuters.

Police sources said security forces fired tear gas, injuring at least seven people.

An army spokesman said separately that at least 32 members of the security forces had been wounded by hand grenades thrown by a group that had infiltrated among peaceful protesters.

Politicians have expressed concern that peaceful protests could be hijacked by violent demonstrators, which could trigger a spiral of violence, as happened last year.

Sunday's demonstrations marked a year since protests over corruption and widespread poverty in Iraq, an oil-rich country. More than 500 people have died in the riots since then.

Earlier this year, protests declined in intensity due to threats, killings, abduction of activists, and restrictions imposed by authorities to combat the COVID-19 pandemic.

On Sunday, the number of demonstrators was in the hundreds, not thousands.
