The United Kingdom imposes quarantine on all travelers coming from abroad

The United Kingdom announced on Friday that it will impose, from Monday, in addition to the mandatory presentation of a negative COVID-19 test, the observance of a quarantine period for all passengers arriving from abroad, ending the exceptions granted to certain countries, in order to avoid contamination with new variants of the virus, informs AFP, quoted by Agerpres.

The UK is severely affected by the second wave of the new coronavirus epidemic, whose virulence is attributed to a variant of the virus.

Criticized for the way of handling the health crisis, Prime Minister Boris Johnson's Conservative government is focusing its efforts on mass vaccination. More than 3.2 million people have already received the first dose of vaccine.

The British executive announced on Friday the end of the exemption from the quarantine period granted so far to countries with a low rate of contamination, such as Japan or Australia.

"Precisely because we have hope for this vaccine and there is a risk of new strains from abroad, we must take further steps now to prevent these strains from entering the country," Boris Johnson told a news conference explaining the new measures.

As a result, anyone arriving in the UK will have to remain in quarantine for ten days, a period that can be shortened by a negative test, carried out at least five days after arrival.

At the same time, the impact of reported delays in the delivery of the Pfizer / BioNTech vaccine is being analyzed, a government spokesman said.

"However, we still plan to achieve our goal of immunizing the four priority groups," which include people over the age of 70, the most vulnerable and health workers by February 15, the spokesman told AFP.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson called on the British to strictly abide by the isolation measures in place to stop the spread of the epidemic.

Although the number of new cases has fallen since the isolation measures were imposed, the UK has seen almost 56,000 contaminations in the last 24 hours, according to official information released on Friday.

The number of people hospitalized, which exceeds 37,000, is growing and has far exceeded the peak of the first wave.

In the UK, more than 87,000 people have died within 28 days of testing positive for the new coronavirus, the highest tally in Europe.
