New demonstrations in Belarus

Tens of thousands of Belarusians protested again on Sunday against President Alexander Lukashenko, reports AFP. Police have made dozens of arrests, writes Agerpres.

Several columns of protesters marched through neighborhoods in Minsk chanting 'Long live Belarus!' and wearing red-and-white flags, the colors of the opposition.

Police deployed troops, armor and water cannons even before the demonstrations began at 10:00. About ten subway stations have been closed and mobile communications networks have been disrupted in some places, according to a France Presse journalist.

Lukashenko has been challenged in the streets since August, when he was re-elected following an election in which the opposition accused him of fraud. On Sunday, more than 100,000 people protested in Minsk, a record in Belarus. In recent weeks, however, participation has begun to decline.

Opposition leader Svetlana Tihanovskaia, who is in exile in Lithuania, welcomed Sunday's protest, saying it was another step towards the country's freedom.

Lukashenko, 66, has been in power in Belarus since 1994 and has reached his sixth presidential term. Supported by Russia, he refuses to resign and has made only vague promises of constitutional reforms to quell protests.
