British Prime Minister Theresa May resigns

Theresa May announced on Friday that she would resign from the leadership of the Conservative Party and British Government on June 7th, in the context of Brexit's political impasse, but will remain in the government until the appointment of her successor, reports Mediafax.

"We have done our best to persuade MPs to support the Brexit Agreement, but unfortunately we have not managed," Theresa May said in a speech at Downing Street on Friday.

"It is now clear to me that it is in Britain's interest that a new prime minister coordinates these efforts. I announce today that I will resign from the position of leader of the Conservative Party on June 7th. We have established with the party chairman the procedure for designating the new party leader to begin the next week," Theresa May said.

Theresa May is the second British Premier woman after Margaret Thatcher. She has been in office since July 13, 2016, replacing David Cameron.
