US President Donald Trump announces that the US is ending its relationship with the WHO

US President Donald Trump has announced the end of relations between his country and the World Health Organization (WHO), which he has accused since the beginning of the Coronavirus pandemic of being too lenient with Beijing, reports AFP. A statement was made at a news conference on Friday (May 29th).

"Because they have failed to make the necessary and required reforms, we will end our relationship with the World Health Organization today and redirect these funds to other urgent and deserving global public health needs," Donald Trump told reporters.

The White House leader reiterated allegations on how the organization had managed the coronavirus pandemic and said the WHO had played China's games, misinforming the world about the virus, Reuters reported.

"China has full control over the WHO despite Beijing contributing only $40 million a year, while the United States has paid about $450 million a year. We detailed the reforms they needed to make and talked to them directly, but they refused to implement them," Trump said.

On April 19, the US president threatened to permanently stop funding to WHO if the organization did not make changes.
