Partial results of local elections in Bucharest

Millions of Romanians went to the polls on Sunday to elect their mayors. The PNL-USR-PLUS candidate, Nicusor Dan, will come to the helm of the capital Bucharest, who according to the partial results obtained over 41% of the votes, while his opponent from PSD, the incumbent mayor Gabriela Firea, obtained a score of 37 %, reports Moldova 1.

For Nicuşor Dan, the independent candidate supported by the National Liberal Party and USR-PLUS, the third attempt was successful. He also ran for mayor of Bucharest in 2012 and 2016.

The incumbent mayor, Gabriela Firea, did not admit defeat after the exit-poll results and said that she is waiting for the official results of the local elections.

Traian Băsescu and Călin Popescu-Tăriceanu also ran for mayor of the Romanian capital. The former president garnered more than 8% of the vote.

The mayor of Chisinau, Ion Ceban, today sent a congratulatory message to the newly elected mayors of Romania. Ion Ceban wanted to point out that the Chisinau LPA has collaborated or is collaborating with several mayors from across the Prut, for the realization of bilateral projects.

"There is great potential for collaboration from now on. Thus, I would like to thank all the heads of local administrations, with whom I have worked so far, and congratulations to all the newly elected mayors. I hope that everyone will work for the benefit of the localities that granted them the mandate," declared the mayor of Chisinau.

The turnout in the local elections in Romania organized in pandemic conditions was over 46%, only two percent lower than in the 2016 local elections.
