Ukraine is getting closer to becoming a NATO member state

Ukraine is getting closer to becoming a NATO member state. The new leader in Kiev, Volodimir Zelenski reaffirmed Ukraine's commitment to relations with NATO and the European Union at a meeting with Jens Stoltenberg in Brussels. At the same time, the NATO Secretary General said that the decision on Ukraine's prospect of joining the Alliance's future remains in place and urged Volodimir Zelenski to implement reforms to fight corruption and consolidate the rule of law.

"You have a strong mandate to implement key reforms to fight corruption and strengthen the rule of law. These reforms are essential to guarantee the security and prosperity of all Ukrainians and to bring Ukraine closer to NATO," said Jens Stoltenberg.

"Of course, for us, NATO is first and foremost the security of our country and, of course, when we talk about the level of training of our troops, the NATO assistance is a key factor," said Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenski.

The NATO Secretary General reiterates that NATO continues to support Ukraine in resolving the armed conflict with Russia. Volodimir Zelenski made his first official visit to Brussels, where he also met with European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker. The latter has announced that the EU would continue to support Ukraine's territorial integrity and the country's desire for peace, prosperity and democracy. Zelenski is due to meet today with European Council President Donald Tusk.
