72/5000 A Russian laboratory that has samples of viruses shaken by the explosion

One of the largest centers for virus research, located in Siberia, was engulfed in flames after a sudden explosion rocked the building. The institution, known as "Vector", is one of two laboratories that holds smallpox virus and several samples of the Ebola virus, HIV, but also anthrax strains, The Guardian reports, quoted by Mediafax.

The explosion occurred during repair work at the Virology and Biotechnology Research Center, located in Koltsovo, in the Novosibirsk region of Siberia, the center's management said on Monday, The Guardian reports. The institution had studies on biological weapons during the Soviet period, and is now one of the main centers of disease research in Russia.
