Tens of thousands of people protested again in Belarus

Tens of thousands of people demonstrated again last weekend in Belarus against President Alexander Lukashenko, and masked policemen put people in vans and fired tear gas, Reuters reports, quoted by news.ro.

Protesters chanted "the impostor" and "Sveta is our president" as they marched through Minsk and other red-and-white opposition-adorned cities. At least 200 people have been detained, the Interior Ministry said.

Some called the protest the "inauguration of the people" for Sviatlana Tikhanovskaya, Lukashenko's main opponent, who fled into exile after the August 9 elections, which Lukashenko's opponents said was blatantly disadvantaged for Lukashenko to win another sixth term.

Lukashenko denies electoral fraud and was inaugurated on Wednesday in a ceremony without any prior announcement, sparking several protests and condemnations from the European Union, the United States and Britain.

French President Emmanuel Macron said in comments in the French press that Lukashenko must withdraw.

"We are witnessing a power crisis in Belarus with an authoritarian administration that is unable to accept the logic of democracy," Macron told the Journal du Dimanche in comments published on Sunday.

Lukashenko replied that, according to Macron's logic, the French leader should have resigned two years ago when the "yellow vest" protest for economic justice began, and mass demonstrations had become commonplace in France.

He offered to help negotiate a peaceful transfer of power between Macron and those protesting against the French authorities.

"As an experienced politician - for an immature one - I want to advise Mr Macron to look around less and, in the end, to deal with France's internal affairs in the end," Lukashenko said, quoted by the official Belta news agency.

Russia has said the EU's decision not to recognize Lukashenko as its legitimate president is contrary to international law and amounts to indirect interference in the country.
