Presidential election will take place on November 1, 2020

The presidential elections will be held on 1 November 2020. A decision to this effect was adopted at today's plenary sitting of Parliament, with the vote of a majority of MPs. The draft decision was tabled as a legislative initiative by a group of MPs. According to the briefing note, the elaboration and submission of this project was dictated by the expiration of the mandate of the President of the Republic of Moldova on December 23, 2020.

"Based on the provisions of the Electoral Code, the elections for the position of president will take place no sooner than 30 days and no later than 60 days before the expiration of the term of office of the incumbent president. Thus, it is proposed that the decision of the Parliament be established on November 1, 2020 as the day of the election of the President of the Republic of Moldova ", said the chairman of the Committee on Legal Affairs, Appointments and Immunities, MP of PSRM  Vasile Bolea.

After the committee's report was presented, members of the parliamentary factions asked questions.

"In the event of a new wave this  autumn of the epidemic, there would be the possibility, as an emergency situation and emergency measures, for the vote to be organized in this way, maybe not in a single day, maybe by correspondence, so that the vote is secured, as some states did during the pandemic? ”, asked the leader of the parliamentary group “Pro Moldova ”, Andrian Candu.

Vasile Bolea said that under the Electoral Code of the Republic of Moldova, elections can be held in one day.

PAS MP Lilian Carp called for Igor Dodon to resign and to hold early elections.

"Shouldn't a corrupt person resign and to hold these elections in June-July? I believe that Igor Dodon must resign and organize these elections this summer ", said Lilian Carp.

"You are not the court to decide one thing or another. All these things are done in a court of law ", replied Vasile Bolea.

Iurie Reniţă, deputy of the DA Platform, requested that the presidential elections be held on October 25.

"What is happening now forces me to take a stand, because the situation we are in is largely yours. The request remains in force, be aware and take responsibility. A pro-European future is far more important than a president. I was attacked by your president. I have never been part of any criminal and mafia structure in my life and I will never do it. That's why I don't accept the offenses. I insist that the elections be on October 25 ", said Iurie Reniţă.

"I understand, the message you sent comes from the former president of PDM. The PD has broken with its past and we will have an authentic construction. Don't worry about us, we will manage on our own ",  replied Pavel Filip.

Socialist MP Vlad Batrincea mentioned that Igor Dodon was voted president by a large number of citizens, and the disrespectful statements addressed to the head of state also affect the voters.

"We understand why he is not your president, that your president is Mr. Plahotniuc. When you talk about a flawless reputation, you have to talk about a flawless person. You like it or not, but he was voted by the citizens and he is the head of state. Have respect for the presidential institution. How many times has the Constitutional Court suspended the office of president? You kept silence then. People will elect the president of the country ", said Vlad Batrâncea.

The decision adopted by Parliament in today's sitting will enter into force on 15 August 2020.
