The Ambassador of the Republic of Moldova to Romania, convened by the authorities in Bucharest

The Ambassador of the Republic of Moldova to Romania was summoned to the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Bucharest to be informed of the reaction of the diplomacy in Bucharest to the statements of Prime Minister Ion Chicu made against Romania, reads a communiqué of the Romanian MFA.

According to the communiqué, the Romanian MFA considers that the statements of Prime Minister Ion Chicu are "completely unacceptable and express their strong disagreement with their content".

"The statements of Prime Minister Ion Chicu are all the more inappropriate as, in the current context of the COVID-19 pandemic, Romania has offered, disinterestedly, substantial support to the Republic of Moldova, demonstrating solidarity and thus being together, concretely, by the citizens of the Republic of Moldova at a very difficult time. The MFA appreciates that these statements denote a profound disrespect for Romania and the privileged bilateral relationship of the Strategic Partnership for European Integration of the Republic of Moldova," the communiqué reads.

The Romanian MFA reiterates that Romania will continue to be a pillar of support for the citizens of the Republic of Moldova, emphasizing that "implementing the reforms undertaken by the Association Agreement with the European Union is not only an obligation for the Republic of Moldova but also a guarantee of prosperity for its citizens."

Romania's MFA reaction appeared after an exchange of remarks on social networks took place on May 22 between Prime Minister Ion Chicu and MEP Siegfried Muresan.

The MEP criticized the activity of the Government led by Ion Chicu, mentioning that it "fails in managing the COVID-19 crisis, because it also failed in implementing the reforms".

In his turn, Prime Minister Ion Chicu replied, mentioning that the opinion of the citizens of the Republic of Moldova is important for the Government of Chisinau. "What have you done in your country that is moaning about the biggest corruption in Europe? You only have in Suceava County half of the number of COVID-19 patients registered in my whole country," Ion Chicu wrote on his social networking page.

The reaction of Prime Minister Ion Chicu has been harshly criticized by political leaders in Chisinau.

The Democratic Party of Moldova (PDM) issued a statement saying it would call for an emergency convening of the Coalition Council on the issue. "We regret the situation in which this senseless dialogue could contribute to the worsening of Moldovan-Romanian relations and we will make efforts to overcome this extraordinary situation," said PDM.

PAS leader Maia Sandu claims that "Chicu's attacks demonstrate a lack of respect for both Romania and the citizens of the Republic of Moldova."

The parliamentary group "Pro Moldova" "condemns the statements of Prime Minister Ion Chicu and expresses on behalf of the inhabitants of the Republic of Moldova an apology for the denigrating attitude towards Romania".

The National Unity Party demands the resignation of Ion Chicu from the position of Prime Minister: "Moldova will suffer a medical, economic and social collapse, we consider that the continued presence of Ion Chicu at the head of the Government is unacceptable".

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration has not yet come up with an official position.
