What does the Prime Minister say about the ban imposed by Tiraspol

The decision of the Moldovan state authorities to suspend, during the testing regime, the border crossing for cars that are not registered according to the provisions of the national legislation is a temporary measure. This was stated by Prime Minister Ion Chicu at the talk show "Public Life". The PM claims that this initiative of the Transnistrian side is unfounded and will not affect the citizens of the Republic of Moldova, Radio Moldova reports.

"Two years ago, the Government offered to our citizens from the Transnistrian region, who live there and not have the possibility to obtain standard-Moldovan registration plates, to register the means of transport with so-called neutral numbers, which are not Transnistrian, but are offered by the Republic of Moldova so that these citizens can move to other countries. Many of the citizens of the Transnistrian region have registered their means of transport with neutral numbers, most of them have not, knowing that as of April 1, 2020, those who have not changed their numbers plates will no longer be able to travel to Ukraine, the structures of our state have decided to do the test period for one week, in order to prevent Transnistrians three months ahead,” stated Ion Chicu.

"The Transnistrian side is happy to deal with any movement that is of benefit to the citizens, respectively, in a way in which they can consolidate their status and have taken this initiative. First of all, it is unfounded, it was a test period that ends on Monday, secondly - it will not affect Moldovan citizens because, as they said, it will be from January 24th. It is a procedure that we have done in the interest of our citizens from the Transnistrian region, so that they do not face further traffic problems. Our respective services, the state bodies will continue to issue registration plates for Transnistria, because we do not want our citizens there to suffer because of the irresponsibility of the respective authorities,” added the prime minister.

TRM.MD recalls that President Igor Dodon had a telephone conversation with Tiraspol leader Vadim Krasnoselskii about the Tiraspol ban on Moldovan drivers. The parties agreed to find urgent solutions to prevent the worsening of the traffic situation and possible difficulties for citizens.

As of January 24, the separatist regime in Tiraspol prohibits cars with Moldovan registration numbers to cross the so-called checkpoints on the Transnistrian segment of the border with Ukraine. According to a statement from the alleged Interior Ministry from Tiraspol, the decision will be applied until the Chisinau authorities renounce the ban on crossing the state border of cars registered on the left bank of the Dniester.
