Federica Mogherini: Moldova must continue to implement the Association Agreement and resume EU funding

The Republic of Moldova must continue to implement the Association Agreement and the reform agenda for the European Union to resume funding. That’s according to the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Federica Mogherini, after the meeting of the Foreign Affairs Council. The official welcomed the peaceful solution of the political crisis in Chisinau, but specified that the EU would closely follow how things would evolve in the Republic of Moldova. On Wednesday, EU Commissioner for EU Enlargement, Johannes Hahn, is expected again in Chisinau.

"It has always been clear to us what needs to be done to have the full EU support, including the financial one: the implementation of the Association Agreement, the country's reform agenda is not for what the EU asks, but because of the Moldovan people's aspirations to see these accomplished reforms. We welcome the fact that a peaceful solution to the crisis has been found. We are sending a commitment message through Commissioner Hahn's visit. And a message of in-depth approach that we will closely monitor the next steps, but that the commitments that the authorities have announced will be achieved and how the situation will evolve," said EU foreign affairs spokesman Federica Mogherini.

On the other hand, the Commissioner for Neighborhood Policy Johannes Hahn announced that he would come to Chisinau on 19 June.

"It is one of my great expectations from the new government to make the necessary reforms to get any support from us. I'll take another trip this week to discuss with the new government. If they speed up the process, we are, of course, ready to start financing again Moldova," said Neighborhood Policy Commissioner Johannes Hahn.

The last visit of Commissioner Hahn to Chisinau took place on 3 June, when the Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Kozak and director of the Office for East-European Affairs of the US State Department Bradley Freden visited Moldova. Officials then met with representatives of parliamentary factions and discussed the need for political consensus.
