The Government to set up an anti-corruption office

An anti-corruption office, which will incorporate national and international experts, including from Romania, will be set up in the near future. The announcement was made today by Prime Minister Maia Sandu at a press conference calling for the resignation of officials who would have executed illegal orders so far. On the other hand, the Cabinet led by Sandu is accused by Democrats of appointing relatives of party leaders in key positions, the Mesager reports.

Prime Minister Maia Sandu announced that a telephone line would be set up shortly to collect evidence of abuses admitted by public officials, and also called for the resignation of officials suspected of having performed illegal orders.

"We appreciate honest and correct people, not those who change their hat with power. And those who have served the former regime through abuses and having to do with all kinds of dubious schemes have to leave. We will not be able to cooperate because of the zero tolerance of corruption of the new government," said Premier Maia Sandu.

Meanwhile, the Democratic Party has criticized the PSRM-PAS-PPDA Coalition saying it would promote relatives of party leaders in key positions. In a press release, the Democrats accused the government of lack of transparency, in conditions when until yesterday they were criticizing and promising transparent appointments and professionalism.

The formation demanded the dismissal or immediate resignation of Gheorghe Balan from the position of Chief of General Police Inspectorate (PGI). Prime Minister Maia Sandu, however, claims that Bălan's appointment was a crisis solution, and Interior Minister Andrei Nastase admitted that he would have a family connection but did not come up with more details.

"The affinities I have with Mr. Balan have nothing to do with his appointment as interim chief of the General Police Inspectorate," said Interior Minister Andrei Nastase.

"Where conflicts of interest are found, those will be corrected and, however, it was a crisis situation, now that we have overcome the crisis, this issue will be resolved. If there is a conflict of interests, then the decision to appoint Mr Balan will have to be canceled," said Prime Minister of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu.

Today, Foreign Minister Nicu Popescu announced that Andrei Popov will no longer be his cabinet chief. Also in the press, it was reported that Popov was the wedding witness of Nicu Popescu.
