Igor Dodon: President must be elected by people

The president must be directly elected by the people, and the last-minute discussions in the society as the head of state must be voted by the Parliament are useless. The statement was made by the head of state, Igor Dodon, in the weekly show "President Replies", reports Moldova 1.

"We are categorically against changing the way the president of the country is elected. The president of the country is to be elected by the citizens, by the people and we very much hope that these elections will take place as stipulated by the legislation, from October to November 2020, "said Igor Dodon.

The reaction comes after earlier, the leader of the Democratic faction in the Legislative, Dumitru Diacov, said that under the conditions of the coronavirus pandemic, the election campaign for the autumn election would not be possible and it would be good to return to the election of the head of state by the MPs.
