MAEIE does not recognize so-called "presidential elections" in Georgia's Abkhazia region

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration does not recognize the so-called "presidential elections" held on March 22 in the Georgian region of Abkhazia.

The MAEIE considers that these pseudo-elections, held illegally in the territory of a sovereign state, are declared null and void, given that they are in blatant contradiction with the fundamental norms and principles of international law enshrined in the UN Charter and the Final Act in Helsinki.

In this connection, the MAEIE calls on the international actors concerned to take all necessary measures to ensure strict compliance with the provisions of the Ceasefire Agreement of August 12, 2008, in particular on peace, security and respect for human rights, including by ensuring access of the EU Mission to monitor the situation in the regions of Georgia - Abkhazia and Tskhinvali / South Ossetia.

In this context, fully sharing the concerns of the Georgian authorities regarding the perpetuation of serious human rights violations in the respective territories, the MAEIE reiterates, in this way, the main position of the Republic of Moldova to further support the efforts made to resolve the political-diplomatic conflict around the two Georgian regions, respecting the sovereignty, territorial integrity and internationally recognized Georgian borders.
