Several PAS members protested against the increased cost of intercity tickets

Several young people from the Party Action and Solidarity (PAS) went to the Presidency to ask for explanations for the Government's decision to increase the tariffs for intercity trips, as well as a program to compensate the expenses for students. They discussed with a group of carriers, who came to argue the need for increase. Contacted by Moldova 1, the Presidency representatives said they did not comment on the action.

The young people left a petition for the head of state, requesting a ticket subsidy program.

"It hurts us, we as students who live and try to survive on a minimum scholarship and we cannot even go and see our own family."

"I came here to express my disapproval against these increases, which do not correlate with the pensions and salaries we have in the Republic of Moldova and we are not the only young people affected," say protesters.

On the other hand, the carriers told the young people that they could no longer operate on the basis of old rates, with the risk of stopping the activity due to losses incurred. At the same time, they stated that the subject should not be politicized.

"They are misled by the deputies concerned. If you want to claim your rights, ask for increased scholarships, increased salaries, pensions. We are now forced to refuse the majority of routes,” says Ghenadie Sajin, interurban route manager.

"The fact that young people have a small scholarship is another problem, but the carriers cannot carry all the problems of the state behind," considers Sergei Arzumanean, carrier.

Contacted by Moldova 1, the head of the press service of the presidency, Carmena Sterpu, said that the presidential institution could not comment on the action. Earlier, the head of state described the opposition critics as populist and urged the Government to provide all information about the negotiations with the carriers. Igor Dodon also mentioned that the tariffs have not been revised since 2013, and the approved increases are lower than the carriers requested.
