The parliamentary majority has made changes to the law of the Prosecutor's Office

The Law on the Prosecutor's Office has been amended. The project proposed by the Ministry of Justice was supported by MPs from the parliamentary majority. The amendments provide for the improvement of the mechanism for the election of the Attorney General by the creation of a commission for the selection of candidates. The project was criticized by opposition MPs.

"The justice reform has been pointed out several times as the most important area for ensuring a sustainable economic development of our country, ensuring the prosperity of the citizens and at the same time avoiding their massive exodus. At the same time, in this respect, Moldova has the largest arrears. The level of trust in the justice field is alarmingly low. We have no other choice but to rebuild justice and restore citizens' confidence in the act of justice. Thus, ensuring that no innocent person will be held accountable, and those who have committed abuses will respond according to the law, ”said Justice Minister Olesea Stamate.

The changes refer to the mechanism for choosing the candidate, the establishment of a Commission that will make the candidates pre-selection. The Commission will be set up by the Ministry of Justice. The Minister of Justice, a former experienced prosecutor, experts, representatives of civil society will be part of its composition, one of the experts will be appointed by the President of Parliament. The commission will be assisted by a psychologist.

Olesea Stamate said that this commission will hold a public contest in which it will select at least two candidates that it will propose to the Superior Council of Prosecutors (CSP). The Minister of Justice has given assurances that the new provisions will in no case affect the independence of the General Prosecutor's Office.
