We sign the Code of Ethics of the journalist from the Republic of Moldova

During the Press Freedom Days, in Chisinau, a national campaign was launched to promote the assumption of the Journalist's Code of Ethics by media professionals and graduates of journalism faculties in the country. The campaign "Signing the Code of Ethics for Journalists of the Republic of Moldova" was initiated by graduates of the International Training Program in Journalism Self-Regulation of the Swedish Agency for Development and International Cooperation and the Press Council of the Republic of Moldova.

All the editorial staffs of the media institutions that have not done this so far, but also the journalists as individuals, as well as the graduate students of the faculties and schools are invited to publicly assume the principles of professional deontology journalism in the country.

The deontological code of the journalist can be signed on the web page of the Press Council.

"The Press Council continues to carry out various activities and campaigns to remind journalists about the need to comply with ethical standards, which is a guarantee of the existence of quality journalism. Every year, new journalists come to the profession, for which the temptation to work at affiliated media institutions can be great. Our message is that only by respecting the standards of the profession can you call yourself a journalist and gain the respect of the public. Through the campaign we are launching today, we want to promote the assumption of the Code of Ethics by as many journalists as possible, so that, in the end, the quality of media information, our public and, in general, democracy will gain," said at the launch event of the Campaign, Viorica Zaharia, President of the Press Council.

"It is very important that young journalists be trained on student benches so that, when they enter the profession, they can make the right choice, reject compromises and have a backbone," said Cornelia Cozonac, president of the Center for Journalistic Investigations.

The deans of the journalism faculties from the universities in the country supported the campaign to assume the professional deontology, and the students will be proposed to sign the Journalist's Code of Ethics upon graduation.

A message of support for the campaign to promote journalistic ethics from the People's Advocate Mihai Cotorobai was sent by Natalia Vişanu, head of the Directorate for the Promotion of Human Rights and Communication within the Office of the People's Advocate.

"The People's Advocate welcomes and supports the national campaign to promote the assumption of the Journalist's Code of Ethics by media professionals and graduates of journalism faculties in the country, considering that it is necessary and timely. The Ombudsman addressed the issue of the quality of journalism in the Report on Respect for Human Rights in the Republic of Moldova in 2019, emphasizing that accurate and objective information of people is crucial for their realization of other fundamental rights. The Ombudsman also argues that quality journalism provides a range of credible information and counteracts propaganda and misinformation.”

The signatories of the Code of Ethics are proposed to display on their electronic pages (websites, portals, blogs, vlogs; in the case of newspapers and magazines - and in a visible place in printed editions) a symbolic image, through which the public is informed about assuming the Code of Ethics.
