MECC ordered the allocation of the necessary financial means for the Theoretical High School "Mihai Eminescu" from Comrat

A block of the Theoretical High School "Mihai Eminescu" from Comrat will be built within a subproject financed by the non-reimbursable aid granted by Romania for preschool institutions in the Republic of Moldova. The share of local authorities amounting to 5.6 million lei will be covered from the budget of the Project "Education Reform in Moldova". A decision in this regard was taken today, May 18, within the Ministry of Education, Culture and Research.

According to Moldova 1, due to insufficient space, the high school administration says it has to reject applications from students.

"Our rooms have become too small. The school administration was forced to improvise classrooms in the corridors, and the supply of the 476 students encounters great difficulties, because our high school is located in a branch of school no. 2 in Comrat. It does not have a festivities hall, and the gym is an improvised one," declared Ştefan Bejan, teacher of the" Mihai Eminescu "High School.

"We ask the central authorities to intervene to ensure that in the Gagauzia Autonomy the rights of children to study in the official language of the Republic of Moldova - the Romanian language are respected. We consider the vote of the People's Assembly of ATU Gagauzia a discriminatory one in relation to the Romanian-Moldovans in the region and an unfriendly one towards Romania since the contribution of the local authorities is absolutely insignificant," declared the president of PUN, Octavian Ţîcu.

Given that Romania's contribution amounts to 15 million lei, the Comrat authorities were to allocate 5.6 million lei. However, the initiative was rejected in the meeting of Friday, May 15, of the People's Assembly. The local elected officials came with the proposal to request the necessary money from the Government.

On the other hand, contacted by Moldova 1, the Minister of Education stated that the money will be allocated from the resources of the Education Reform project in Moldova.

"We intend to create optimal conditions for the development of the educational process by capitalizing on the non-reimbursable aid granted by Romania, so that the school becomes modern and attractive for the growing generation. We decided that the 5.6 million lei that were to be paid from the autonomy budget will be covered from the funds of the Education Reform in Moldova project, a decision that was also agreed by our partners that finance this project," said the Minister of Education, Culture and Research, Igor Sharov.

"Mihai Eminescu" High School is one of the three high schools taught in Romanian in ATU Gagauzia. Currently, over 440 pupils study here.
