207 years since the occupation of Bessarabia by Tsarist Russia

207 years since the occupation of Bessarabia by Tsarist Russia are marked today. Following the Russian-Turkish War of 1806-1812, a treaty was concluded in Bucharest, according to which East Moldova between the Prut and Nistru was annexed to the Russian Empire. It is the first occupation of this territory, according to historian Vlad Mischevca, who also wrote a monograph on this issue, reports Radio Moldova.

"This commemoration signifies about two centuries since the signing of the Russian-Turkish Peace Treaty of 1812, which generated the appearance of the Bessarabian problem, the most painful and prolonged ethno-territorial issue of the Romanians. From 1812 onwards, in the space between Prut and Nistru, we have a perpetual Russian domination of almost two centuries of territory alienated by military force and diplomatic negotiations," Vlad Mischevca said.

Several commemoration actions of May 16, 1812, when the Bessarabia was taken and annexed to the Russian Empire, took place today in Chisinau.

The Liberal Party organizes an action in the Great National Assembly Square, at the Commemorative Stone dedicated to the victims of the occupation regime.

An action called "207 years from the Bessarabia’s abduction" will also be organized by the UNIREA-ODIP Association at 16:00 in the Great National Assembly Square in Chisinau.
