22 years since the accession of the Republic of Moldova to the ECHR Convention

22 years ago, on September 12, 1997, the Republic of Moldova became a party to the European Convention for Human Rights (ECtHR). The Republic of Moldova has committed to respect the rights guaranteed by it and has recognized the jurisdiction of the ECHR, Radio Moldova Newsreel reports.

From 1997 to December 31, 2018, the ECHR has registered more than 14 thousand applications against the Republic of Moldova. Of these, more than 1200 were still waiting to be examined.

Regarding the number of pending applications, Moldova ranks 11th out of the 47 ECHR member countries.

To date, the ECHR has delivered 420 judgments in Moldovan cases, of which 33 in the first nine months of this year. On the basis of the ECHR judgments and decisions issued until December 31, 2018, the Republic of Moldova was obliged to pay compensation of over 16 million euros.
