Access for people with disabilities to public transport discussed within a press club

The problems of access for people with disabilities to public transport were discussed today in a press club organized by the Center for Journalistic Investigations (CIJ), reports Radio Moldova.

"It's quite difficult to get to school, work, doctor. In Chisinau, the situation is better, because a certain number of transport units are adapted. It remains difficult to implement at national level the transport insurance under conditions for people with disabilities. The challenge remains, if the carriers can purchase an adapted means of transport that is more expensive. In the Republic of Moldova, we do not have a service that adapts the transport with the necessary equipment,” said Galina Climov, executive director of the Alliance of Organizations for persons with disabilities.

To remove these difficulties and ensure their social inclusion, a new working group was created at the Chisinau City Hall.

"On January 21, the Chisinau City Hall organized an activity regarding the establishment of the working group to ensure the social inclusion of persons with disabilities, by creating accessibility conditions and setting up support services. At the meeting, we established the needs of each party, the directions of activity and the priorities we propose. We propose as public authority, 2021 be declared as a year with a city accessible to all,” declared Angela Cutasevici, deputy mayor of Chisinau municipality.

However, for real change not only in Chisinau, but throughout the country, it is necessary to involve every member of our society, added activist Olga Afanas.

"Our legislation is very open to all of us. We have implementation plans everywhere, but I think we have to start with each one of us. When you see that a person’s rights are being violated or there are no conditions created, you should care. We need to notice certain aspects, to help the person, or to guide the person how to write an application to an NGO, besides the fact that we have to access or make action plans," said Olga Afanas.

The press club takes place within the campaign "Journalists for equal opportunities and diversity", implemented by the Center for Journalistic Investigations with the support of the Canadian Embassy in Bucharest.
