International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women marked today

Today is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. It was officially marked in 2000 by the UN resolution and which is a legal tool by which governments, UN agencies, international and non-governmental organizations are invited to organize events on this day to draw attention to the issue of violence against women, Radio Moldova reports.

One of the Council of Europe's most significant international treaties is the Convention on Preventing and Combating Violence against Women and Domestic Violence, also known as the Istanbul Convention. Moldova has signed this convention, but it has not yet been ratified by the Legislative.

In this context, an important role belongs to civil society, which must promote the idea that the principles of this treaty are to prevent and combat violence against women, not undermining family values, the head of the Human Dignity Department said in an interview for Radio Moldova, the head of the Human Dignity and Gender Equality Department of the Council of Europe, Daniele Nicola Cangemi.

"We need to raise the awareness of both parties, both civil society and the authorities. It is very important to set goals for the convention, because there is a lot of confusion about its interpretation and impact. The convention has a single objective and this is to fight violence against women, starting from its prevention, protection of victims, cooperation between all actors", said Daniele Nicola Cangemi.

Violence against women and domestic violence is a widespread phenomenon in Moldova. National estimates according to the study "Violence against women in the family", conducted by the National Bureau of Statistics, suggest that more than 63 percent of women aged 15-65 have suffered at least one form of violence in their lifetime. In 2019, 2,597 cases of domestic violence were registered, and in the first three months of this year - 678 cases.
