World Tuberculosis Day marked today

The World Tuberculosis Day is annually marked on March 24 worldwide. In Moldova, this disease remains one of the priority issues of public health, the country being among the 30 countries with multi-drug resistant tuberculosis in the world. However, in recent years there is a tendency to stabilize the epidemiological situation caused by tuberculosis, Radio Moldova reports.

It is a long-lasting contagious disease affecting the respiratory system. Since 1993 tuberculosis has been declared by the World Health Organization to be a public health emergency. The phthisio pneumologist  at “Chril Darganiuc” Institute of Phthisio pneumology, Diana Condraţchi, claims that the number of deaths caused by tuberculosis is higher than that caused by any other infectious disease.

Tuberculosis is transmitted by air. A patient sick with TB spreads the bacilli when coughing, sneezing or talking. Untreated, an infected patient with the Koch bacillus can infect another 15 people annually.

According to Diana Condraţchi, the diagnosis and treatment of tuberculosis in Moldova is free of charge.

According to the World Health Organization data, 20 million new cases of tuberculosis were registered in 2017, of which 90% in adults.
