People's Advocate: Moldova has major problems in human rights protection

Moldova has major human rights issues because the Office of the Ombudsman and civil society are marginalized. This statement was made by the People's Advocate, Mihail Cotorobai, at the Human Rights Defenders Forum held today in Chisinau. According to him, in the future, the Ombudsman's Office will work more closely with NGOs in order to solve these problems, Mesager reports.

"First,  Ombudsman's recommendations are ignored. Secondly- the proposals of civil society are ignored. Thirdly – some judges are persecuted. Advocates who defend  non grata people at power also have problems", said People's Advocate, Mihail Cotorobai.

"Ten years ago, the Committee of Ministers called on Member States to consider 11 points to progress in the field of human rights protection. Here are some of these: creating a favorable environment for human rights defenders, strengthening the judiciary, preventing attacks and harassing human rights defenders, creating independent national committees", said Eva Gutjahr Deputy Head of Office at the Council of Europe.
All of these issues will be analyzed starting with next year by a Consultative Council created by the People's Advocate Office and composed of members of civil society.
