Orthodox Church celebrates St. Basil the Great today

Today, January 14, Orthodox Christians celebrate Saint Basil the Great, one of the greatest holy hierarchs of the Christian church and one of the greatest Christian theologians. The holiday also marks the beginning of the New Year in the old rite.

According to the traditions, on Saint Basil, the households open their gates to receive bands of seeders (especially children). The children go with Semănatul or Sorcova, throwing wheat grains, corn, oats thus blessing the families. The seeds that fall in the yard or house symbolize the faith in a more prosperous year and a rich harvest. The seeders are rewarded with sweets and money.

According to the scriptures, St. Basil is the first Hierarch who founded, besides churches, asylums and hospitals for the poor.

St. Basil lived in the time of Emperor Valens, when the Church was persecuted by Arie's disbelief. He fought hard for the Orthodox faith and dared to reproach even King Valens, who also fell into Arias' heresy. Through his words he struck in the wrong beliefs of the heretics, gave teachings and exhortations for the proper preparation of habits, helped the poor, the sick and the old.

Saint Basil the Great died in 379, he had not even turned 50.

In the Republic of Moldova, more than 50 thousand men are baptized Vasile, and over four thousand women bear the name Vasilisa.
