Thanks to the project "Neighborhood Surveillance", criminality in the villages of Moldova decreased by 10%

Crime in Moldovan villages decreased by about 10 percent. That's due to the project "Neighborhood Surveillance" launched by the General Police Inspectorate (IGP) six years ago. The police representatives organized a totalisation event, and the responsible for the slum were awarded diplomas for involvement, Moldova 1 reports.

On the streets of the villages, where the locals are watching neighbors' households, there is an order. Since they've been keeping their homes for each other, less is stolen, there's less noise and even some crimes have been discovered, people say.

"We are always with the police alongside people. We have discovered an offender who killed a man and I discovered him myself," said the inhabitant of the village of Lencauti, Ocnita, Rima Grosu.

Moldova has taken the surveillance practice from states such as Estonia, Sweden and the USA. Police say the project is successful in most localities.

"The crime rate reduced by 9.4%. It is worth noting that in parallel to this, we have decreased the number of people who have been imprisoned - twice. If in the previous years there were about 4,500 people imprisoned, in 2018, only two thousand people were incarcerated," IGP chief Alexandru Pânzari said.

The "Neighborhood Surveillance" project was launched in 2013. Currently, PGI has ushered in the country around 2000 neighborhood sectors.
