Switzerland and UNDP provide protective equipment for medical professionals in Moldova

The first installment of vital medical equipment was delivered to the Moldovan authorities as part of the efforts of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) to support the country in the fight against the COVID- pandemic. 19. Protective medical uniforms will help frontline medical personnel counteract the new Coronavirus.

The Ministry of Health, Labor and Social Protection received part of the protective equipment, purchased thanks to a first agreement of $200,000 signed between SDC and UNDP. The rest of the equipment will be delivered soon. It will be distributed to medical institutions that have run out of stock because of the unprecedented demand caused by the outbreak of the pandemic. Protective medical uniforms are highly needed to reduce the risk of infection of frontline medical personnel.

"The personal protective equipment, provided by the Government of Switzerland, will be distributed to hospitals in charge of treating COVID-19 cases in Moldova," said Caroline Tissot, Director of the Swiss Cooperation Office in the Republic of Moldova. "They will help frontline medical staff in their day-to-day work to isolate and destroy the COVID-19 virus. It is an effort for which we are extremely grateful."

"In these difficult times, UNDP supports Moldova," said UNDP Resident Representative in the Republic of Moldova Dima Al-Khatib. "We are working together with the authorities of the Republic of Moldova, as part of a joint response by the UN and development partners, to support the procurement of medical equipment and devices, to assess long-term recovery needs and to help the country develop a multi-sectoral strategy in response to the pandemic, to protect its citizens and the economy, without leaving anyone behind.”

The first case of COVID-19 was registered in the Republic of Moldova on March 7, and since then 298 cases have been confirmed. The UN system in Moldova supports the national response to the pandemic through coordinated activities, which aim to protect people, increase the capabilities of the health care system and reduce economic and social shocks.
