Guide for police officers on human rights

A new guide was presented today by the Soros Foundation-Moldova and the General Inspectorate of Police (IGP). The paper promotes respect for the rights and freedoms of detainees and was designed as a master book for police officers. The guide is structured in three basic chapters, which describe the procedures of detention, escort, but also the release of the person, reports Moldova 1.

"The IGP together with the Soros Foundation-Moldova, in recent years, has decided to develop operational procedures aimed at ensuring a better assurance of the rights and freedoms of detainees," said Ruslan Ojog, deputy head of the Criminal Investigation Directorate.

"For us, it is an operational project, based on which we try to provide the necessary assistance to develop very clear procedures for the police, in terms of respecting the rights of detainees, for everyone, it is about the right to silence, about the right to health care," said the director of the Justice Department at the Soros-Moldova Foundation, Victor Munteanu.

"We have tried to make this guide as maximum and practically available to police officers, so that it is an easy-to-use tool and when questions arise in the field of detention, in making use of operating procedures, this guide can provide answers to questions," said the lawyer Vadim Vieru.

The Standard Operating Procedures for the Police were developed within a project funded by the European Union and the Soros Foundation-Moldova.
