Dormition Fast starts today

Orthodox Christians who observe the old-style church calendar begin the Fast for the Assumption of the Virgin Mary today, August 14. It should be held until August 28, when the Assumption of the Virgin is celebrated, IPN reports.

The Dormition Fast was established as preceding the great feasts of the Transfiguration of the Lord and of the Dormition of the Mother of God.

Traditionally, during the strict fourteen-day fast, the christians abstain from meat, dairy, fish, wine, and oil on weekdays, with some relaxation on the weekends and on the feast of the Transfiguration. The fast is relaxed for children and the elderly, or for those with a medical condition.

The Dormition fast is not as strict as the Great Fast, but it is stricter than the Apostle’s and Nativity fasts.
