Testimonies of Moldovan officers participating in peacekeeping operations

In war-torn countries, where water is more expensive than gold, they bring peace - we are talking about the soldiers of the National Army, seconded in peacekeeping missions under the auspices of the United Nations (UN). Since 2003, more than 130 Moldovan officers have participated in international operations to ensure peace in Kosovo, Liberia, South Sudan and the Central African Republic, side by side with soldiers from around the world. On the 72nd anniversary of the first peacekeeping operation authorized by the UN Security Council, ten Moldovan soldiers proudly wear the blue beret, Moldova 1 reports.

"They set fire to houses, rape women, it's very difficult to see these things," says Tatiana Scutari, a UN observer.

Due to the Coronavirus pandemic, the situation has become even more complicated.

"It is clear that they have much more serious problems, with much more serious diseases, they have started to use more methods. Even at those points at the gendarmerie, there are special places for people and children to wash their hands, many NGOs offer hygiene products in the villages," mentioned Tatiana Scutari.

Africa does not forgive any mistake - this is what Sergiu Chetraru, who is in his second mission on the African continent, claims. The responsibility he feels for the lives of children and helpless people motivates him to move on.

"As long as we have distinguished ourselves as well-trained officers, we have given a helping hand when needed, people do not forget that, and the flag of the Republic of Moldova is well recognized in South Sudan. I was very pleasantly surprised when a gentleman of color greeted me in Romanian," says Sergiu Chetraru.

Under these conditions, it is the longing for home that gives them strength.

"Practically all evening, we are in touch, sometimes we even do homework with the children, we are practically there all day, but only in the online environment unfortunately, anyway I hope that the traffic restrictions will be lifted as soon as possible and I will I see the family again," says Sergiu Chetraru.

Since 2003, more than 130 Moldovan officers have been deployed as military observers in Sudan, South Sudan, Ivory Coast, the Central African Republic, Liberia and Kosovo.

"At the level of partnerships, we are in talks with the UN in order to expand the location of the Moldovan military, today we are talking about Lebanon, but it is very likely that we will be present in Lebanon with our specialists," said Defense Minister Alexandru Panzari.

Currently, more than 120,000 peacekeepers from 116 countries are participating in UN-sponsored peacekeeping operations
