Rising number of cases of violence during the COVID-19 pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic has considerably increased the number of cases of domestic violence, but also against women. In the first nine months of the year, 533 women turned to legal, psychological and social services. Thus, the Women's Rights Center launched the campaign "Dear deputy, listen to me too". The action aims to raise public awareness about the seriousness of the phenomenon and to urge people close to the victims to support them, Moldova 1 reports.

Nicoleta Prutean is 18 years old and she says that the phenomenon of violence persisted in her family, and her childhood was a stressful one, her mother suffered. She is now a teenager and understands the situation much better, which is why, she urges women who are victims of domestic violence to turn to the police.

"There were situations when I had no choice, but I grew a little older, my mother had already left her father and divorced. First of all, what you should do is appeal to the authorities, in order to solve this problem immediately ", says the young woman.

Other residents of Chisinaualso believe that violence against women and their families is a serious violation of human rights and that these cases are more common.

"I believe that violence is not only from the husband. We live in a violent society, where even in groups people are violent through their behavior. Minors are also violent, because they watch different movies ”;

In Moldova, 73% of women have suffered from psychological, physical or sexual violence since the age of 15, and during the COVID-19 pandemic the phenomenon worsened.

"The pandemic has worsened the phenomenon of domestic violence. The number of women who have asked for help is increasing. If I were to make a comparison with last year, in 2019 the Center for Women's Rights (CDF) was notified by over 400 women. By 2020, there are over 600 women who have asked for help ", said Violeta Andriuţa, CDF lawyer.

In 2019, the police registered 11,981 complaints regarding cases of domestic violence, but also against women. At the same time, from 2014 to 2019, in Moldova 159 women died because of acts of violence.
