Over five thousand Moldovans get glaucoma every year

More than five thousand Moldovans suffer from glaucoma every year - the disease considered to be the second leading cause of blindness worldwide after cataract. The main cause is increased intraocular pressure, affecting the optic nerve. Most of the time, the patients do not have symptoms, and this causes them to talk to the doctor too late, when the treatment no longer has the expected effect. The specialists urge people, after 35 years of age, annually to go to the ophthalmologist to measure the intraocular pressure, which can detect the disease in time, reports Moldova 1.

In such a situation, thousands of Moldovans get every year who seek the help of doctors when the disease can no longer be stopped.

Doctors say that genetics play a major role in the onset of the disease, which occurs, most commonly after age 50.

"In the beginning, the patient presents neither pain nor other visual disorders. Glaucoma is different: primary, secondary, more open primary glaucoma is more dangerous. It is asymptomatic and the patient wakes up not seeing, often it happens that the operation does not solve the given case the patient gets the irreversible blindness. There are other types of glaucoma when the patient wakes up with eye pain, with irradiation in the head," said the doctor in medical sciences, Ion Geru.

According to statistical data, over 70 thousand Moldovans are diagnosed with glaucoma. Globally, their number constitutes almost 1% of the entire population of the world.
